Rachel Moss, The Compacts and Contracts of Witches ...

Rachel Moss (2023, Painting and Early Modern Studies)
The Compacts and Contracts of Witches with Devils and Infernal Spirits or Familiars, are but Erroneous Novelties and Imaginary Conceptions, 2020
Oil on canvas

This painting is part of a larger body of work that focuses on heresy persecution and accusations of blood libel and sorcery leveled against medieval and early modern Jews. For centuries, the enchanted world has been present in the religious mindset, and with it has come great devastation and prejudice. In recognizing the sources, impacts, and depictions of such belief, as well as the understanding of the emerging views that would lend itself to the persecution of the other, one is able to understand European fears of the supernatural and the notion that the devil had a cemented impact on everyday life and practice, and how they remain in the minds of the present day even still.
